The shape of this elegant 19th century French box is what catches the eye first, but it's the craftsmanship of these old Napoleon III era c. 1850-70 boxes that captures the heart. This one would have been either a dressing box or a sewing box.
Fitted still with the mirror in the interior lid, it's unique among our collection of fine French boxes. The chevron-worked Kingwood veneer is usually found on rectilinear or square boxes and not so much on the serpentine ones. What a feat of cabinetry this one represents. Curving yet linear, and trimmed out on the top with a fine brass pencil edging that matches the brass of the push-button opener and the trim on those mother of pearl cabochon "jewels".Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The exterior is exceptionally fine, no chips or cracks even though this is a curved veneer, usually susceptible to some damage or lifts, chips. The mother of pearl "jewels" are all intact, lovely. The interior still has the old original shaped mirror set into the lid, and the old moire washed silk liner and chenille.
Some tattering to the silk, as you can see, but no odor or stain. Coming from me, a longtime box collector, this one is rare and superb!
