This is an Antique English Green Leather Jewelry Box with Key. These items are an eclectic mix including gold and sterling jewelry, and many unique, and in some cases, one of a kind items, in wood, brass, and iron, and other materials as well. We do not have the expertise to know whether or not it might be Georgian instead, but in any case, it does appear to be quite old. I thought the handle and escutcheon shapes might be consistent with a Georgian box but I do not know for sure. The jewelry box is clad in green leather with a nice patina of age, adding to the appeal of the box.
The top is slightly "domed" but there is not soft padding below on the top. The subtle shade of green is very attractive. There is variation in the color and patina of the leather. Some of the photos were taken with flash, and some without, but even the latter tend to shown more distinct color variation than is apparent on the box itself when viewed in normal ambient light. The box is 6" x 4" and 2 1/2 high.
There top has a recessed handle as seen. The non-ferrous metal is the color of nickel. I do not know if it might be nickel plated over brass or some other base metal. The keyhole escutcheon appears to be brass, as does the lock.
The original key is iron, and the lock is in good working order. PLEASE NOTE: The tassel on the key complements the color of the box perfectly, but it is a modern one, not original to the piece. We bought several from an antique dealer who makes and sells them, for just such a purpose as this as well as for window shade pulls. There is a tray inside to provide additional convenient organization of jewelry. The inside of the box and the tray are each lined with a couple of different materials. The tray has a raised leather ring for storage of a ladies pocket watch. The box could be used by a man as well, but I thought that the relatively small diameter of the pocket watch section suggested the intended use was probably as a ladies jewelry box. The tray has storage along the front for ring or earrings, and sections for brooches, bar pins, etc.
On the left and right. The area below the tray provides storage for necklaces and bracelets. The jewelry box is overall in good condition, with the following issues to be noted. Variation on the patina of the metal on the handle and the key, and a little very light surface rust on the iron key as seen. Variation in the patina of the leather as discussed above, and a few scuffed spot and as seen in the photos there is also a small 3/8 tear through the leather on the left side of the right edge panel as seen in a closeup photo. This is also quite minor. The leather covering is a bit loose / frayed along the left edge. This is very minor and does not affect the integrity of the covering. The bottom of the box is covered with a piece of black leather, paper product or other material that shows some wrinkling, wear, and scuffing as seen. The box is offered as found / as seen / as described. To view a wide variety of antique, vintage and contemporary items. Doing that is against U. We pride ourselves on multiple, large, clear photos.
