Blackwood is a medium size tree native to south eastern Australia and Tasmania. It grows in rainforests to a height of approximately 35 metres. It is a close relative of the Hawaiian Koa wood, which is famous for use in musical instruments. The heartwood varies from a lustrous golden brown to reddish dark brown with curly to interlocked grain. Blackwood is known for its unique and striking fiddleback, which occurs only in select trees, giving the wood a quilting effect reminiscent of gathered silk. Fiddleback is highly sought after by woodworkers for furniture, craft and musical instruments. To find out more about this jewellery box and how it is constructed. If you have any other questions.
